00:01
Oh, so this is a
raspberry lemon cake,
00:08
and looking at this
picture reminded
00:12
me of our time
together every week.
00:15
Look at all those
delicious layers.
00:18
Think about all
the layers that we
00:20
experience every week
when we are here,
00:23
through worship,
through teaching,
00:26
through prayer
and testimonies.
00:29
And I was reminded of
00:31
this verse taste and
00:32
see that the Lord is good,
00:34
Psalm 3048, And
I want to say,
00:37
I am so thankful for
00:39
our church staff who
00:41
has used their
time, their skills,
00:44
and their abilities to
00:46
put this study
together for us,
00:48
because it truly has
00:50
been an incredible study.
00:53
And to my dear
friend Jolie,
00:55
I know that that was not
00:57
easy for you to
00:58
share that with
us this morning.
01:00
But your testimony
is so powerful,
01:03
and I venture to say
that there are women in
01:05
this room who have
a wounded heart,
01:09
and so I pray that
01:11
your words have
ministered to them today.
01:14
I appreciated some of
01:17
the highlights that
you shared with us,
01:19
the love of Jesus,
01:21
the word of God
ministering to
01:24
you in the depth
of your darkness.
01:27
And I loved the
illustration of
01:29
the farmer's lifeline from
01:32
the house to the barn
01:34
in the midst of the storm.
01:36
I see that as a great
reminder that our,
01:41
our heavenly Father
has provided
01:44
that lifeline for us
01:45
and his son, Jesus Christ.
01:48
And I just want
to thank you for
01:50
being willing
to share that,
01:52
your story with us.
01:54
Let's look at Luke 22.
01:57
I titled this the
kiss of death.
02:01
The kiss of life,
so Lord Jesus.
02:05
I pray in these next
02:06
few minutes that
you would open
02:08
our hearts and our minds
02:11
to the leading of
the Holy Spirit God.
02:14
I pray that for each of
us as we leave today,
02:17
that we would have
the desire to
02:19
see you more
clearly, Lord.
02:22
To love you more dearly
02:24
in our daily
walk with you.
02:26
And so, Father, we
commit this time
02:28
to you in your
precious name, Amen.
02:32
This chapter of
Luke overflows with
02:35
details of what Jesus
02:37
faced in a short
period of time.
02:40
Our focus today will
be on verses one
02:43
through 6.47, through 53.
02:46
I really want to
encourage you to
02:49
read this whole
chapter in order to
02:51
put everything
into context and
02:54
get the perspective of
02:56
events that take place.
02:59
But in an overview,
03:01
it begins with Judas
03:03
plotting with
the chief priest
03:05
to betray Jesus.
03:07
But meanwhile, Jesus is
03:10
planning for the
last Passover,
03:13
the establishment of
the Lord's Supper.
03:16
He announces his betrayal,
03:19
he tells of
Peter's denial,
03:21
and he warns the
disciples of the future.
03:25
He goes to Gethsemane,
03:27
where he is
betrayed by Judas,
03:29
arrested and led to
the high priest house.
03:33
Following this, Jesus
is denied by Peter,
03:36
he is mocked and beaten.
03:39
Then he's brought
before the Sanhedrins.
03:42
Well, what can we learn
from this overview?
03:45
Well, while Judas was
03:48
busy plotting to
betray Jesus,
03:51
Jesus was on mission.
03:54
He knew Psalm 4019 would
soon be fulfilled.
03:59
Even my close friend,
someone I trusted,
04:03
one who shared my bread,
04:06
has turned against me.
04:09
Let's look at Verses
1.2 from this chapter.
04:13
Now, the Festival
of unleavened
04:16
Bread was drawing near,
04:18
which is called
the Passover.
04:20
The chief priest
and the scribes
04:22
were seeking how to
make way with Jesus,
04:25
for they feared
the people.
04:28
Up to then, in verse two,
04:31
we see the opening
scene begin to unfold.
04:34
The people were excited as
04:36
the festival approached
in Jerusalem.
04:39
Because of this,
the chief priest
04:42
did not want to
cause a commotion
04:45
and wanted to wait until
04:47
the festival was over
before arresting Jesus.
04:51
They definitely did not
04:53
want to instigate a riot.
04:56
How and when could
they make this happen?
05:00
And the curtain closes.
05:02
In verse three, we read,
05:05
but then Satan entered
05:07
into Judas
called Ascariot.
05:10
This is very important
for our study today.
05:15
Judas gave himself over
05:18
completely to the
will of Satan.
05:22
How could this happen?
Judas had made
05:25
a verbal commitment to
05:26
follow Jesus, just
like the others.
05:29
Did his heart remain the
same without change?
05:33
When Jesus taught,
05:35
he knew some of his
listeners would
05:38
leave and never apply
05:40
a word They heard
05:43
the Devil filled
the heart of Judas.
05:46
He influenced his mind
with evil passion.
05:49
The Devil is not
a mind reader,
05:52
but he is a good
observer and he watches.
05:57
We saw this in Genesis,
chapter three.
06:00
When Satan began
his rebellion
06:01
on Earth, attacking Eve.
06:03
And where did the
attack take place?
06:06
In the garden of Eden.
06:09
In Genesis 31
through five,
06:11
we note the way Satan
works by casting doubt,
06:15
he added to the word,
06:17
he told the first lie,
06:19
and he appealed
to Eve's pride.
06:22
We learn that he is
subtle in his approach.
06:27
Then we must entertain
the question,
06:30
does Satan make us
06:32
act contrary
to our nature?
06:35
We are bitter. What
comes from it?
06:38
If we are hypocritical,
what comes from it?
06:42
If we are a betrayer,
what comes from it?
06:47
But what? We
are prayerful.
06:50
What comes from it?
06:51
What we are a peacemaker.
06:54
What comes from
it? What if
06:58
we are in the word,
what comes from it?
07:02
Satan had witnessed
Judas stealing money.
07:06
He had also
seen Judas lean
07:09
in as he listened
07:11
to conversations
around the table.
07:13
He watched as he
07:15
passed the fish
and the bread,
07:17
and he was present when he
07:19
saw Lazarus raised
from the dead.
07:21
Satan watched
Judas participate
07:25
in all that Jesus
had given him to do.
07:30
Think about this.
07:32
Judas had the
extraordinary
07:34
opportunity to see Jesus,
07:37
listen to Jesus, and
walk with Jesus.
07:42
He was one of the boys,
07:44
but he never
belonged to Jesus.
07:48
Judas knew Jesus,
07:53
but Judas didn't
know Jesus.
07:57
Judas was a pretender.
08:00
I was reminded
of a song by
08:02
Ken Edema. Don't
play the game.
08:05
Pretending you're
a Christian is
08:07
a luxury you can't afford.
08:10
Maybe you can fool the
people in the church,
08:13
but you just can't
fool the Lord.
08:15
You know, he knows
everything you do.
08:18
He knows just
how you feel.
08:20
Cut the act,
state the facts.
08:23
Why don't you be for real?
08:26
I know you speak
the language.
08:28
I know you sing the songs.
08:29
Well, you've been
playing Holy Joe
08:31
with Jesus much too long.
08:33
Cut the great pretension.
08:35
Don't try to be a star.
08:37
Get out off that stage
08:39
right now and
become who you say.
08:41
You are way down deep
inside yourself.
08:44
You hate the
games you play,
08:46
but you've been
feeling more
08:48
involved with
every prayer.
08:50
You pray. Let it
go no longer,
08:53
let the new things start.
08:56
Give yourself to Jesus
08:58
and let him change
your heart.
09:00
So will you stay
where you are.
09:03
Play the game.
Be the fraud
09:06
or die to self
and live to God.
09:09
Don't play the game.
09:11
You've got to
make a brand new
09:13
start and give
him your heart.
09:15
So don't be a pretender.
09:18
We know Judas
was a pretender.
09:23
Consequently,
there were things
09:25
Judas could never
understand.
09:27
On one such occasion,
09:30
he witnessed an incredible
act of worship.
09:34
What takes place in this
09:35
moment is evidence that
09:37
Judas wasn't truly
engaged to the Messiah,
09:41
to whom he represented.
09:43
As we studied last week,
09:45
six days before
the Passover,
09:48
Jesus was in the
home of Lazarus,
09:49
who had been raised
from the dead.
09:51
And Martha and
Mary were there.
09:53
And Mary, overcome
with emotion,
09:57
with deep devotion, with
09:59
adoration, began to weep.
10:03
Her tears falling on
the feet of Jesus.
10:08
Luke 738 tells us she
10:11
poured valuable
perfume over his feet,
10:14
and using her hair,
10:16
she began to wipe
and kiss his feet.
10:22
A wonderful fragrance
filled the air.
10:26
Judas, he reprimanded Mary
10:29
for pouring out the
expensive perfume.
10:32
Listen to this.
Judas missed it.
10:37
He missed it. He was
so disconnected.
10:41
He was so self centered,
10:43
he was so self absorbed,
10:45
he missed an incredible
moment of worship.
10:51
Well, what was his motive?
10:53
Well, we know he
wanted Mary's money.
10:56
He wanted to give it
to the poor so he
10:58
could take a percentage
for himself.
11:01
Now the curtain opens
back up in verse four.
11:05
And this is the Judas we
11:08
see he went away
and discussed
11:11
with the chiefs and
captains how he might
11:14
betray him and deliver
him up to them.
11:18
The chief priest
would have never
11:20
guessed who was about
11:21
to walk through the door.
11:23
Looking up, they see
Judas approaching them,
11:27
and I wonder if
there wasn't
11:29
a little swagger in
11:30
his step, a
little tinge of,
11:32
I'm the big man on
campus as he approached
11:35
them with a prime
business deal.
11:39
Hey, he knew how to
take advantage of
11:41
a good opportunity
and just like that,
11:44
he was the lead spy,
11:46
the one with all the
whereabouts of Jesus.
11:49
He had all the information
11:50
needed to betray
his friend,
11:53
and he was willing
to do it for
11:56
30 pieces of silver,
the chief priest.
12:02
They were delighted.
They were gleeful.
12:05
They were pleased with
12:06
this proposal from Judas.
12:08
Perhaps there wasn't
even a blink of
12:11
an eye when the
reward money
12:13
was offered from
either party.
12:17
Our lesson takes
us to verse 47,
12:20
but I would be remiss not
12:22
to spend a short
time in the garden.
12:25
In Verses 41 through 44,
12:28
we see the
picture of Jesus.
12:30
He is on bended knee,
12:32
pouring out his
heart to the father,
12:35
the agony, the
earnest prayer,
12:38
the angel appearing and
12:40
strengthening
him in spirit,
12:41
and his sweat, like
12:44
clots of blood dripping
down on the ground.
12:47
In all of this he wanted
12:51
not his will but the
will of the father.
12:55
His father so
quieten your heart.
13:00
Do you hear the
silence of Gesemone?
13:06
Do you hear the
sob of his soul?
13:12
Do you hear the
tears of agony,
13:16
the droplets of
blood, stricken,
13:20
sweat as they fell
to the ground?
13:24
It was in these
moments that
13:26
enabled Jesus to
meet his betrayal
13:29
with courage and
assurance of his
13:32
father's will being
done in verse 47.
13:38
While he was
still speaking,
13:40
suddenly a mob came
and one of the
13:41
12 named Judas
was leading them.
13:44
He came near Jesus
to kiss him.
13:46
But Jesus said
to him, Judas,
13:49
are you betraying
the son of man with
13:51
a kiss in the middle
of the night,
13:55
Working under the
cover of darkness
13:58
and a lot of ugly
happens in darkness,
14:02
Judas led the way
to Gossemone.
14:05
I find it interesting
that Satan began
14:08
his deception in
the garden of Eden.
14:12
Now we see him at
14:13
work in the garden
of Gasemone,
14:16
always on the
prow, seeking whom
14:19
he may devour
for his gain.
14:23
We must be mindful
of his skill
14:27
to thwart what God
has ordained for us.
14:32
There, Judas found Jesus
14:34
and came near to
him to kiss him.
14:36
But Jesus said to him,
14:40
Judas, are you betraying
14:43
the son of man
with the kiss?
14:46
I feel like Jesus
called him out there.
14:49
When Judas approached him
14:52
and heard him speak.
14:53
I wonder what he
saw in the eyes of
14:57
Jesus and what he
14:59
heard in the sound
of his voice.
15:02
How did it feel
to kiss his face
15:06
in fake affection
and betrayal?
15:10
Remember Mary's
reaction to
15:12
Jesus earlier
in our lesson?
15:14
In complete
reverence, not only
15:17
did she anoint his
feet with oil,
15:19
but she fell and
kissed his feet.
15:23
It was the kiss
of devotion,
15:26
the kiss of adoration,
15:28
the kiss of worship.
15:30
It was the kiss of life.
15:32
Judas, in complete
surrender to Satan,
15:37
kissed the face of Jesus,
15:39
the kiss of betrayal,
the kiss of death,
15:42
the kiss leaving
Satan to think
15:45
he had finally
won the kiss
15:47
that garnered him 30
pieces of silver.
15:53
And that kiss caused
15:56
deep remorse in verse 49,
15:59
when those around him
16:01
saw what was
going to happen,
16:02
they asked Lord, should
16:03
we strike with the sword?
16:05
And I found this
interesting
16:07
because in haste,
16:10
without waiting for a
response from Jesus,
16:13
we read what happened
next in verse 50.
16:16
Then one of them struck
16:18
the high priest and
cut off his right ear,
16:20
but Jesus responded
no more of this.
16:23
And touching his
ear, he healed him.
16:26
Then Jesus said to
16:27
the chief priest,
the temple police,
16:30
and the elders
who had come to
16:31
him have you come
out with swords
16:34
and clubs as if I were
16:35
a criminal Every day
16:37
while I was with
you in the temple,
16:40
you never laid
a hand on me.
16:42
But this is your hour
16:44
and dominion of darkness.
16:47
Judas secretly led
them to Jesus at night
16:51
under the influence of
16:53
the prince of darkness,
Satan himself.
16:57
But now Judas, watching
and listening to
17:01
Jesus realized that
17:02
things were quickly
unraveling.
17:05
Jesus was not defending
17:07
himself though
Satan thought
17:09
he was getting
the upper hand.
17:11
Everything was proceeding
to plan God's plan.
17:16
It was time for
Jesus to die.
17:21
Betrayal of his friend
17:23
now weighed
heavily on Judas.
17:26
A quote from
Dr. Tony Evans.
17:29
Realizing that he had
17:30
sinned by betraying Jesus,
17:33
but unwilling to repent,
17:35
Judas threw the money
he received from
17:37
the chief priest into
17:39
the temple and
hanged himself.
17:41
Refusing to take back
Judas's blood money,
17:45
the chief priest
used it to buy
17:47
the field in which
Judas hanged himself.
17:51
There, Judas's
decaying body
17:53
eventually fell
and burst open,
17:56
and his intestine
spilled out.
17:59
If you want to look
18:01
for further study on that,
18:02
I just want to give
18:03
you some scripture
references.
18:04
Matthew 2071 through
ten, Zachariah, 11,
18:08
12 through 13, and
Acts 118 through 19.
18:14
But, you know, we know
that betrayal doesn't
18:18
belong exclusively to
Satan and to Judas.
18:23
As Christians, we may
experience betrayal,
18:28
or we may even
commit betrayal.
18:31
Betrayal is ugly.
18:34
It shows up in a word,
18:37
in a look, in an action.
18:42
It's heartbreaking.
18:44
It's gut wrenching.
18:45
It tears up families and
18:47
friendships and
work relationships,
18:50
and sadly reaches
into the walls of
18:54
the church and into
18:56
ministries while I was
engaged in college.
19:00
So you can imagine
my dismay when
19:02
I hear from my
fiance that he
19:04
is in love with
another woman
19:06
and that he had been
dating her for a while.
19:10
So the ring that he
put on my finger,
19:14
I took off my finger
19:15
and I gave it back to him.
19:17
And rumor had it that he
19:20
gave my ring to
the other woman.
19:27
Rejection, betrayal.
19:29
Call it what you want,
19:31
but it is painful.
19:33
And what's funny and
kind of sad about this,
19:37
he actually said to me,
19:39
because you've
been engaged,
19:42
no other man will
want to marry you.
19:45
Okay. Really?
19:49
Doesn't that sound like
19:51
a double standard to you?
19:54
And I do have to
say that when
19:57
my husband met
me 42 years ago,
20:01
first time he met me,
20:02
he walked away and said,
20:04
I'm gonna marry that girl.
20:10
But, you know, I soon
learned that I wasn't
20:14
defined by that
man or his words.
20:18
How so? You might ask,
20:21
listen to this ladies.
This is so important.
20:26
We aren't defined
by the betrayer,
20:30
we are defined by
20:32
the maker of
heaven and Earth.
20:34
Our father, who
calls us his own,
20:41
more important
Jesus, wasn't
20:46
defined by his betrayer
in life's journey,
20:52
your life's journey,
If you've experienced
20:54
betrayal as a recipient
or as a betrayer,
20:58
Jesus knows your pain.
21:00
He bore it in the garden.
21:03
He bore it on the cross,
21:05
and he will bear
it for you today.
21:08
You only need to ask.
21:10
We know this because
his pain would
21:13
have been far
greater than ours.
21:16
Because he never
gave in to
21:19
a sinful response like
21:21
we often do to get
past our pain.
21:25
We read in Hebrews
41416 Therefore,
21:29
since we have a
great high priest
21:31
who passed through
the heavens,
21:33
Jesus the Son of God,
21:35
let us hold fast
to our confession,
21:37
for we do not have a
high priest who is
21:40
unable to sympathize
with our weaknesses,
21:43
but one who has been
tempted in every way,
21:48
as we are yet without sin.
21:51
Therefore, let us approach
21:54
the throne of grace
with boldness,
21:56
so that we may receive
21:58
mercy and grace to help
22:00
us in time of
need in closing.
22:05
Judas made choices.
22:07
All of us made choices.
22:10
Judas's betrayal of
Jesus is a reminder
22:15
to us that sin
is betrayal.
22:20
All sin is betrayal.
22:23
Do you ever wonder if God
22:26
cries when we do
the things we do,
22:29
say the things we say,
22:32
act the way we act.
22:34
Ultimately, the prayer
in the garden of
22:37
Gesemone was for every
single one of us.
22:43
The tears, the
sweat falling like
22:48
droplets of blood
on bended knee,
22:52
pouring out his
heart to our father.
22:56
That was the result of
his great love for us.
23:01
Think about this. Every
single tear drop,
23:08
every single one
for each of us.
23:14
The kiss from Judas,
23:16
though meant for death,
23:18
was really the
kiss of life.
23:20
I've got one application
for you today,
23:24
and it comes from
Proverbs 423.
23:28
Above all else, guard
23:32
your heart for everything
23:35
that you do flows from it.
23:38
We're going to
move into a time
23:40
of invitation today,
23:42
and perhaps there's
someone here
23:44
who's never trusted Jesus
23:47
as your Lord and savior.
23:48
And it's really
as simple as ABC.
23:52
And I'm going to wait
for this to come up.
23:55
Here we go.
23:55
I actually want all of us
23:58
to read this out
loud together,
24:02
the scriptures
that are going
24:03
to come up in the prayer.
24:05
Admit Romans 323 for
24:10
all have sinned and
24:12
come short of the
glory of God.
24:15
Lord, I admit
I am a sinner.
24:18
I need and want
your forgiveness.
24:22
Believe John 316.
24:26
For God so loved the world
24:29
that he gave his
only begotten son,
24:32
that whosoever
believeth in him
24:35
should not perish but
have everlasting life.
24:40
Lord, I believe you gave
24:42
Jesus to save me
from my sins,
24:45
and though I cannot fully
24:47
understand that
love, I thank you.
24:51
Confess Romans 109.
24:55
If you confess with your
mouth that Jesus is
24:59
Lord and believe in
25:00
your heart that God
raised him from the dead,
25:03
you will be saved.
25:05
Lord, I am calling
on you and I confess
25:10
my faith and trust you
25:12
that Jesus died
and rose again.
25:15
I choose Lord.
25:18
If you prayed that
prayer today,
25:21
if this was your
personal prayer,
25:24
then please share with
your table leader.
25:28
It's the best decision
that you'll ever make.
25:32
In my opinion, I
don't think that
25:34
this study has
been an easy one.
25:37
I want you to listen
25:39
in just a minute
to this song.
25:41
Does he still
fill the nails?
25:43
And it's meant for
reflection of how
25:46
we view sin in our lives,
25:49
knowing that Jesus
paid it all.
25:52
First, Peter 224.
25:55
He himself bore our sins
25:58
in his body on the tree
26:00
that we might die
to sin and live to
26:04
righteousness
by his wounds.
26:07
You have been healed.
26:09
On your table, you're
going to find a box
26:12
of nails and blank cards.
26:15
Pray asking the Lord
to heal your wounds.
26:19
Maybe right on that card,
26:21
a word, a name, a prayer.
26:26
If you feel led today
we have a cross
26:30
over here and there's
26:32
hammers right next to it.
26:34
Come over and just
26:36
hammer your card
on the cross,
26:39
knowing that the cross is
26:42
your point of
forgiveness and
26:45
grace from the one who
26:46
knows and loves you best,
26:48
The Lord Jesus, Father.
26:51
I pray right now,
in this moment,
26:53
for a movement of
the Holy Spirit God,
26:56
I pray that you would
reveal to us things in
27:00
our lives that we need
27:02
to open our hands
and give to you.
27:05
Move in away Lord Jesus,
27:07
that only you can, and we
27:09
pray this in your
name, ladies.
27:12
This cross is going
to be here all day.
27:16
So if you don't
want to move
27:17
now and you'd like
27:19
to put something
on it later,
27:20
you have that
freedom to do.
