Key Verse: Matthew 6:33 (CSB) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
Matthew 6:19-24 (CSB) “Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness—how deep is that darkness! 24 “No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money.
1. What is the object of your focus?
Vs 19a “Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth…”
- Jesus clearly states if our focus is on the things of this earth, they are of no value
Vs 20a “But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven…”
- Jesus gives a clear picture of the difference between focusing on the things of God and the things of man
Vs 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
2. Our focus is based on how we view things
Vss 22-23 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness—how deep is that darkness!
- The lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, pride of life
1 John 2:16 For everything in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one's possessions--is not from the Father, but is from the world.
- If we look at things wrongly, it is destructive to every part of our being
3. Whom do you serve?
Vs 24 “No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money.”
